Sustainability Practices for Securing Competitive Advantage

Amidst intense port competition and dynamic business environment, sustainable competitiveness in commercial port operations critically depends on achieving sustainable competitive advantages. Prior studies on port competitiveness have limitations to accommodate sustainable port competitiveness in dynamic business environment in which the studies, such as measuring competitiveness and analyzing determinants, based on static business environment. In order to overcome limitations, this study de-constructed sustainable port competitiveness based on the resource dependancy theory and the sustainable competitive advantage theory, reviewing opportunities to achieve sustainable competitiveness in commercial port operations. Results reveals that the practices to achieve sustainable competitiveness requires longterms perspective to create sustainable competitive advantages in intense port competition, and should compositively accommodate sustainability, stability and potentiality to growth. the relevant practices categorized into environmental technologies, continuous monitering and improvement, and communicational and cooperations. the results help theoretical advances on port competitiveness, providing useful insights for future improvement in sustainable port development and operations.
