The paper reviews the factors that Korean commercial banks consider when they make loans of shipping finance. Apart from the fact that Korean commercial banks have no keen on shipping finance, they are reluctant to take part in the shipping finance because the shipping industry has been on the prolonged recession since the global financial crisis in 2008. The outstanding of shipping finance by Korean commercial banks amounts only 3.8 trillion Korean won equivalent to 3.5 billion US dollars as of the end of 2013. By the AHP method, Bankers in charge of shipping finance in Korean commercial banks are questioned the 9 sub-factors which are grouped in 3 categories ie., Lender category with 4 sub-factors, Borrower category with 3 sub-factors, and Third party guaranty category with 2 sub-factors. According to the outcome of AHP using Expert Choice 2000, it is clear that Korean commercial banks are regarding the availability of US dollars, the shipping finance structure, and full third party guaranty as the most important sub-factors in each category. The policy to enlarge the supply of shipping finance by Korean commercial banks must focus on the strategy to ease the most important sub-factors.
