개화승 무불 연구

A Study on the enlightened monk Muburu

개화승 무불에 대한 연구를 통해 개화기의 불교인들이 조선불교를 중흥시키려고 했던 의지를 알 수 있다. 그러나 불교계에서는 개화기의 불교사 연구를 등한시하였다. 불교계에서 조선 불교사를 정립하려는 노력이 소홀했던 점과 함께 특히 개화기 불교운동에 대한 학문적 연구의 필요성을 성찰하지 못했기 때문이다. 개화기에 일어난 새로운 불교운동의 태동은 우리 불교중흥의 원동력이 되었으며 그만큼 연구의 가치가 크다. 무기력하고 혼란한 격변기의 조선 사회를 구해내고 새로운 시대의 희망을 찾고자 한 개화파에게 이념적 기반을 부여한 것이 불교사상이었다. 개화승 무불은 재가在家불자들과 함께 국가 개조를 위해 헌신하였고, 실천불교를 통해 불교공동체사회를 이룩하려고 노력하였다. 개화승 무불의 업적과 사상을 통해 개화기 불교인들이 그들에게 주어진 역사적 소임을 어떻게 실천하였는지 바르게 조명하고자 한다.

Through the study on the enlightened monk Muburu, the researcher could verify that Buddhists had tried to restore Chosun Buddhism during the enlightenment period. On the contrary to this effort, true research on the history was almost overlooked. Buddhist community of this period was negligent in their efforts on unscrambling the Buddhist system as well as realizing the necessity for academic research. However, new Buddhism movement during the period became a driving force on the restoration of the present Buddhism, which means true research on the history of this period is essential. During the period when the enlightenment party sought the revival of Chosun from the chaos and new hope of the country, it was the thought of Buddhism which helped establish ideological basis. Muburu, a monk was dedicated to restoring the country with Lay Buddhists and tried to build a new Buddhist community through practical Buddhism. The purpose of this study is to enlighten the accomplishments and ideas, through which it will show how the buddhists acted for the country’s restoration during the chaotic times.
