입센의 극작술과 『인형의 집 Et Dukkehjem』의 현대적 의미

Ibsen’s Dramaturgy and the modern meaning of A Doll’s House

헨릭 입센은 노르웨이에서뿐 아니라 세계전역에 거쳐 연극을 풍요롭고 광대한 예술 형식으로 탈바꿈시켰다. 특히 금제와 편견의 구체제에 맞서는 개인의 저항을 설파한 인물이다. 입센의 대표작품들 중 특히 『인형의 집』에서 입센은 여성들에게 개인의 의식과 각자의 사적인 자유와 관념이 사회의 요구보다 도덕적으로 우위에 있다는 주장을 펼쳤다. 이러한 결과로 여성해방론자들은 여성을 독립적인 주체로 내세운 입센의 선구자적인 정신을 높이 평가하며 노라의 용기 있는 행동에 뜨거운 박수를 보냈다. 그렇지만 이 작품이 오랜 세월 속에서도 현재까지 주목을 받을 수 있는 이유가 여성해방운동의 입장을 대변하기 때문만은 아니다. 이 작품이 위대한 이유는 무엇보다도 입센이 뛰어난 극작법을 통해 선구적으로 현대적 의미를 재창출할 수 있는 다양한 해석의 여지를 주고 있기 때문이다. 그 예로 『인형의 집』에서 크게 부각되었던 노라의 모습 외에 다른 여성들의 모습이 현대적인 의미에서는 매우 중요하며, 가부장제 이데올로기와 남성중심사회의 원천이 되는 돈과 도덕성과의 관계라는 관점은 이 작품을 현대적으로 새롭게 바라볼 수 있는 근거를 마련해 준다. 노라가 남편과 자식을 버리고 자아를 찾아 집을 뛰쳐나간다는 충격적인 결말로 인해 당시 권위적이고 남성 중심적 사고에 사로 잡혀 있던 사회에 던져진 뜨거운 논쟁으로 인해, 노라에 집중되어 있던 해석에서 헤어 나오기가 어려웠던 것이 사실이다. 본 논문에서는 입센의 극작술을 살펴보고, 입센의 『인형의 집』에서 소외되었던 등장인물들 중 주요한 여성들과 노라를 함께 재조명해봄과 동시에 여전히 뜨거운 논쟁거리인 돈과 도덕성에 대한 문제를 통해 이 작품이 지니는 현대적 의미를 도출해보고자 한다.

Henrik Ibsen transformed theater into one of the most affluent and greatest arts not just in Norway but also throughout the world. He is, especially recognized as an artist who believed and clearly stated for individual’s resistance against social prejudices and taboos. Amongst all of his masterpieces, Ibsen strongly argued through A Doll’s House that for a woman, the individual liberty and idea morally triumphs social obligations. After all, the feminists highly appreciated Ibsen’s trail-blazing stance of women’s individual independence, applauding Nora’s bold and brave actions. However, the reason why the work can draw lots of attention even today, long after its born, is not just it represents the view of feminists. The greatness of the work lies in the fact that it creates diverse rooms for different interpretations, allowing to reinvent or recreate the work with modern meanings, which is all possible because of his remarkable dramaturgy. The dramatic ending where Nora chose to give up on her child and husband to seek herself and leaves her sweet home triggered a hot debate in society where authoritative male-chauvinism had been deeply rooted and because of the impact of the debate, the discussion has mainly been concentered on Nora. In this paper, the dramaturgy of Ibsen will be explored and other female characters in the work who have not been the main subjects of discussion will be revisited with Nora. At the same time through the issue of money and morality which is still a hot topic in our times the modern meaning of A Doll’s House will be sought.
