Reconsideration of Multi-R Phenomena in English

The purpose of this study is to consider a few phenomena associated with /r/ and suggest possible alternative explanations for the phenomena in each case. In non-rhotic accents, firstly, as for word-final /r/ alternation, this paper accounts for it by suggesting a modified version of /r/-deletion. Secondly, due to limitations of previous approaches to intrusive- r, this paper suggests a new rule to account for that. Thirdly, after considering glide formation, this paper demonstrates that /r/-insertion has a similar formation process as glides /j/ and /w/, but /r/ should not be considered the same kind of glide as /j/ and /w/. In addition, this paper shows that based on spreading-based accounts, /r/-insertion is different from glides /j/ and /w/, as well as possibly accounting for it, unlike the assertion of Uffmann (2007). Finally, this paper adopts a new approach depending on level-based structures to simultaneously account for /r/-deletion occurring in a word, and shows that through a level-based approach, we can account for it more concisely than a previous approach.
