현상계 너머를 지향하는 『노자』와 현상계로 내려온 한나라의 『노자』 해석

The Laozi and the Han scholars' interpretation of the Laozi: descending to the earthly realm from the unworldly realm

『노자』의 유위 비판은 다른 제자백가의 주장과 차별화되며 강력한 울림을 지닐 수 있었지만, 소규모 종교 집단이라는 특수한 입장에서 내린 극단적 처방이었던 만큼 소극성 일변도와 강압성이라는 한계를 지닌다. 춘추 전국 시대라는 혼란기에 소박한 소규모 공동체로 복귀할 것을 염원하며 강력한 유위비판을 앞세운 『노자』의 메시지는 한나라라는 새로운 시공간에서 더 이상 이전과 같은 울림을 갖기 어려웠다. 한나라의 『노자』 해석자들은 무위를 유위의 제거 대신 자연을 따르는 움직임으로 정의하면서 자연성과 어울리기 힘들었던 소극성 일변도와 강압성을 극복한다. 이러한 적극적 무위관의 등장에는 시대적 변화뿐 아니라 도가 현상계 너머 무를 근본으로 하는 속성에 머물지 않고 현상계의 역동적 속성까지 아우르게 된 사상적 변화도 영향을 주었다. 한 나라의 『노자』 해석은 시대적 사상적 변화에 부응하여 『노자』의 문제점을 극복한 해석이라는 의의를 지닌다. 하지만 욕망을 자극하는 산물과 공존을 선택하며 도의 고요한 속성을 닮은 내면 수양을 강조하면서 또 다시 자연성에서 멀어지는 문제를 떠안게 된다.

The Laozi's idea of denouncing deliberated human action could receive firm support while being clearly differentiated from the other Hundred Schools of Thoughts. However, this idea, which was an extreme assertion of a particular group of people, most probably the religious cult of the Pole Star, has its drawbacks, namely sustained passivity and coerciveness. The idea of denouncing human action would not be readily accepted under the new era of the Han, since this idea was proposed out of an aspiration to restore small communities of the remote past in the hope of ceasing the chaos during the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States periods. As a new approach to the Laozi, the Han expounders offer a positive definition of wuwei 無爲, namely human action in accordance with ziran 自然 (so of itself), instead of a negative definition of exclusion of deliberated human action as in the Laozi. With this positive definition of wuwei, they exonerate the Laozi from passivity and coerciveness. The new interpretation of wuwei was not only encouraged by the advent of the new era but also by the philosophical change that sees dao 道 as the concept that encompasses the active characteristics of the earthly realm, in addition to the main characteristics of dao in the Laozi, namely serene ones behind the earthly realm. The Han expounders present a compelling interpretation of the Laozi that solves the Laozi's predicament while reflecting the changes both in time period and in the perception of dao. However, as they support human beings not disturbed by objects of desire, their interpretation is caught in another predicament by emphasizing the importance of inner cultivation which appears to require painstaking efforts.
