Relationships between the Adolescents’ Usage Time of Smart Phone before Bedtime and Sleep Quality

Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify adolescents’ usage time of smart phone before bedtime, and its relationship with the quality of their sleep. Method: A descriptive survey was used with a convenience sample of 153 students at D high school in Daegu, Korea. The data collected include self-reported questionnaires using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) as instrument. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis and Pearson’s correlation with SPSS 18.0 program. Results: The average time of smart phone usage prior to bedtime was about 1 hour and 23 min. Data analysis showed negative correlation between usage time of smart phone prior to bedtime and the quality of sleep, The longer the time of smartphone use, the lower the quality of sleep. Conclusion: This study showed the usage time of smart phone before bedtime was associated with poor quality of sleep among adolescents It is necessary to perform further researches and develop relevant programs in addressing the problems related to smart phone addiction.
