Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effects of music therapy on physiological and emotional stress response of undergraduate nursing students. Method: Total 33 nursing students participated in this study. The physiological stress response were measured through blood pressure and pulse rate monitoring and emotional stress response was measured using visual analog scale (VAS) composed of 3 items such as depression-pleasure, tension-relaxation, and anxiety-comfort. First, participants were exposed to stressful situation for 20 minutes, and stress response was measured thereafter. The intervention group (n= 16) received music therapy for 5 minutes and the control group (n=17) sat quietly for 5 minutes without any stimulation. After 5 minutes, stress response was measured for the second time. Data were analyzed using independent paired t-test and SPSS 21.0. Result: The intervention group showed significantly decreased in the systolic blood pressure (t=-2.34, p=.026) and increased in the relaxation (t=-4.32, p<.001) compared with control group. The diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate, and other emotional stress response were not significantly different between groups. Conclusion: These research findings suggest that the use of music therapy even for a short time was effective in decreasing physiological and emotional stress response of nursing students.
