Impacts of a Local Festival on Hotel Sales

The purpose of this research was to identify the direct impacts of a local festival by examining how a local festival, especially Gyeongju World Culture EXPO, contributes to the activation of the local economy with the focus on a particular enterprise. The result of this research shows considerable differences from the results of the precedent researches on local festivals in terms of the recognition of the local autonomy organizations who host the festivals as well as the recognition of the tourists. Therefore the followings are proposed as solutions to complement the above-mentioned problems in terms of the activation of the hotels representing the local tourism-related businesses; 1) the encouragement of the participation of the local citizens and the local tourism-related businesses from the planning phase in order to pass on the economic effects of the festival directly as well as to renovate the negative perspectives resulting from the government-led planning without much input of the local citizens and the local tourism-related businesses when the hosting committee of Gyeongju World Culture EXPO is to be reorganized, 2) the establishment of more facilities and programs associated with the Bomun Lake Resort and the downtown area for the purpose of transferring from the pass-over tour to sojourner tour, 3) the utilization of the nearby hotel facilities for night-time performances and exhibitions which were not actively pursued owing to the difficulties of managing performance halls at night, which will in turn activate the night-time tour in the Gyeongju Area
