琉球문인 蔡溫의 『簑翁片言』에 함의된 儒·佛·道에 대한 思惟

Yugu’s Literary Scholar Chaeon’s Thoughts of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism Implied in Saong Pyeoneon

18세기 유구왕국의 문인이자 國師였던 채온은 유구왕국을 이해하는데 매우 중요한 인물이다. 채온이 어떤 사상을 소유했는가는 유구뿐만이 아니라 동아시아적 견지에서도 의미가 적지 않다. 즉, 중국의 사상 및 문예사조가 당시 조선을 비롯한 유구의 지식인들에게 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지에 대해 채온은 중요한 역할을 하는 인물이다. 또 조선과 유구도 교류가 있었으므로 당시 유구의 실력자인 채온의 思惟는 관심의 대상이기도 하다. 그러나 채온에 대해서는 많은 저술과 당대의 정치적 영향력에 비해 그다지 많은 연구가 이루어지지 않았다. 또한 불교사상을 공부했고, 양명학자로 판단되는 은자에게서 받은 영향 등으로 인해 그의 사상을 유교, 불교, 양명학 등이 혼합되었거나 유불을 겸했다고 생각하는 경향이 있다. 그러나 그에 대한 정치한 논의는 부족하다. 그러므로 이 논문은 채온의 많은 저술 중에 서 우선 『사옹편언』에 함의된 유․불․도에 대한 그의 사유를 고찰하였다. 연구 결과 『사옹편언』에 함의된 채온의 사상은, 유교에 대해 ‘사해의 사람들은 모두 유교의 가르침을 받았으니 유교야말로 사해의 스승’이라거나, ‘천하는 하루라도 유학이 없어서는 안 된다’라는 등, 유학을 正學으로 존숭하였다. 불교에 대해서는 석가가 중생을 깨우치고자 한 기본 교리를 긍정하였다. 다만 불교의 사후 천당․지옥론에는 문제가 있는데 이는 불교를 공부 하는 자들의 잘못으로 돌리고 있다. 반면 도교에 대해서는 天理가 아닌 사사로운 사유를 하고, 허무를 이야기하며 현학적인 말로 대중을 현혹하며 예법을 버린다며 이단이라고 비판했다. 곧, 『사옹편언』에 함의된 채온의 유․불․도에 대한 사유는, 유교의 사상속에 불교와 도교가 포함되며, 그 중에서도 불교가 도교 보다는 유교적 사유에 좀 더 가깝다고 여긴다.

Chaeon was a literary scholar and national master of the Yugu Kingdom in the 18th century. He is very important to get a better understanding of that kingdom. Thoughts that Chaeon developed are very significant from the dimension of East Asia as well as the kingdom. In other words, his thoughts are important to know how the then Chinese thoughts and literary trends influenced the intellects of Joseon and Yugu at that time. Since Joseon and Yugu made exchanges with each other in that period, ideas from Chaeon who was one of the powerful in the then Yugu deserve to be noticed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to consider Chaeon’s thoughts of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism which are implied in Saong Pyeoneon written by him. The findings of the study can be summarized as follows. Chaeon’s ideas implied in Saong Pyeoneon suggest that he respected and worshiped Confucianism as an orthodox discipline, supported by his sayings like ‘Since all people of the whole world were taught from Confucianism, no one is better than Confucianists to be master for that world’ or ‘The universe can never exist even for one day without Confucianism’. Concerning Buddhists, Chaeon recognized the basic doctrines of Buddhism that are about Buddha’s awakening of the public. However, he disagreed on the Buddhist view of afterlife, that is, dichotomy between the heaven and the hell. Chaeon attributed this problem to people studying Buddhism. Meanwhile, Chaeon criticized Taoists as heretics for speculating on personal things rather than the law of nature, talking about futility, dazzling the public with pedantic words and turning their deaf ears to courtesy and manners.
