The Name of Medicines in Japanese in the Meiji Period and Suffixes of -藥 and -劑

This paper examines the roots and usages of the Chinese suffixes -薬 and-劑 for the names of medicines found in 増補訂正英和字彙 (1882). As 附音揷圖英和字彙 (1873) is known to be influenced by 英華字典 (Lobscheid　1866-1869), I examine whether 増補訂正英和字彙 (1882) is also influenced by 英華字典 (Lobscheid 1866-1869) with respect to the names of medicines. I also compare the aspects in the Kindaigo corpus (国立国語研究所), 和英語林集成(2版, 3版) and 藥品名彙 (1874). In this study, I suggest that the suffixes-薬、-劑 used in the names of medicines in 増補訂正英和字彙 (1882) is adopted by 藥品名彙 (1874). This research is conducted as part of a study on exchanges of words around 1880 between Japanese and Korean. The influence of these suffixes for Korean in the same period will be left for future study.
