콜링우드의 역사이론에 비추어 본 교과의 실제적 의의

The Practical Significance of School Subjects from the Viewpoint of Collingwood's Historical Theory

이 연구의 목적은 콜링우드의 역사이론을 살펴봄으로써 그것에 비추어 ‘교과를 배우는 일의 실제적 의의는 무엇인가’ 하는 질문에 대하여 교육철학적으로 가능한 한 가지 대답을 탐색해보는 데에 있다. 콜링우드에 의하면, 자율적인 학문으로서의 역사학의 과업은 현재의 맥락 속에 ‘과거의 진술’이라는 형태로 밀봉되어 있는 ‘과거의 사고’를 역사가 자신의 정신 안에 재연하 고 인식하는 일이며, 이러한 역사학의 목적은 정신의 자기인식에 있다. 그리고 이 정신의 자기인식은 역사가의 정신적 삶의 향상, 궁극적으로는 인류 정신의 역사적 진보에 필요한 실제적기반이 된다. 콜링우드의 이러한 관점에서 보면, 교과를 배우는 일은 학생이 교사와의 대화적교섭 속에서 교과 내부에 감춰진 인류 정신에 관한 자기지식을 획득하고 이를 이론적 기반으 로 삼아 학생 자신의 정신의 자유를 깨닫고 정신의 향상을 실현하는 일이며, 이 의미의 교육의 실제적 의의는 학생 자신의 정신적 삶의 향상과 이를 통한 인류 정신의 총체적 삶에의 참여에 있다. 그리고 이처럼 정신의 자기지식에 기반을 두는 교육의 활동들은 ‘자기를 안다’는 것은 곧 ‘자기를 향상시킨다’는 뜻이라는 점에서 이론적 활동임과 동시에 실제적 활동이다. 그리하여 만약 그것이 각종의 다양한 활동들이 한데 어우러져서 이루어지는 하나의 통합된 실제라고 본다면, 교육은 안쪽의 정신을 향하는 이론을 가르치고 배움으로써 그 정신의 안에 거주하는 ‘내향적이고 내주적인 실제’이다.

The purpose of this study is to inquire Collingwood's historical theory, and reveal a philosophically plausible answer to the following question, 'what is the practical significance of learning school subjects?', from the viewpoint of his theory. In his theory, all history is the history of past thought, and hence historical thinking is the reflective thinking that re-enacts in historian's own mind the past thought, that is, the past mind's living thinking incapsulated in the present context of so-called 'past statements', and thereby aims at the self-knowledge of human mind. And this self-knowledge is the practical foundation, what is called 'historical inheritance', for the improvement of human mental life and hence historical progress by re-creating in his or her own mind the past thought to which he or she is heir. According to this theory, education is the human activities in which a student acquires the self-knowledge of human race's mind implicit in school subjects under conversational interaction with a teacher as a living representative of human race's mind, and thereby furthers the betterment of his or her own mental freedom and life, and consequently participates in the total life of human race's mind. And this betterment on the foundation of self-knowledge is the genuine practical significance of learning school subjects. In general view, all activities of education on the foundation of self-knowledge are theoretical and at the same time practical, in that 'to know self' means 'to better self'. Therefore, if education is seen as an integrated practice in which those activities are harmonized and performed, then it is the inward and indwelling practice which actualizes learning to turn school subjects inward and thereby indwelling in human race's mind as the inside of them.
