전북지역 원삼국시대 문화적 공백기에 대한 재검토

Reexamination of cultural dark age for the Period of the Proto-Three Kingdoms in Chonbuk Province

전북지역 원삼국시대 편년에 관한 논쟁 중의 하나는 기원 전후부터 2세기까지의 문화적 공백기의 여부 문제이다. 이 글의 목적은 전북지역 원삼국시대의 최근 자료를 정밀 분석하여 이러한 ‘문화적 공백기’의 문제를 검토하는데 있다. 분석결과 전북지역 원삼국시대는 2기로 대별할 수 있고 Ⅰ기는 Ⅰa와 Ⅰb(Ⅰa:기원 전후~2세기 전반, Ⅰb:2세기 중반~2세기 후반)로 세분할 수 있다. Ⅰa기는 고창 교운리 수혈 등 극소수만 확인되어 그 문화상을 정확히 알기 어렵다. 그러나 그 동안 알려지지 않은 상당수의 유적(백산성·동산동·장동 등)이 Ⅰb기에 등장하였음을 파악할 수 있었다. Ⅰb기의 유적에서는 원형계 주거지, 경질무문토기 등이 확인되었고, 이와 함께 타날문토기가 다수 출토되었다. 기존 연대관에 따를 경우 타날문토기는 3세기 이전으로 소급하기 어려운 상황이었으나, 이번 분석을 통해서 2세기대에 이미 타날문토기가 전북지역에서 사용되었음을 새로이 파악할 수 있었다. Ⅱ기는 3세기대로 편년되며 타날문토기가 압도적으로 증가하는 시기이다. 또한 주거 구조(평면형태, 기둥배치) 및 내부시설(화덕) 등에서도 이전과 다른 양상이 나타난다. 이러한 Ⅱ기의 문화는 전북지역 마한 문화와 백제를 연결하는 중요한 가교 역할을 하게 된다.

A debate about the chronology of the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period in Chonbuk Province is whether there is a cultural hiatus from around the beginning of A.D. to second century, sometimes known as ‘cultural dark age’. In this paper, recent data from the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period in Chonbuk Province are analyzed to reexamine the presence of the ‘cultural dark age’. Results of the analysis show that the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period can be divided into two periods. The first period (I) is further divided into Ia and Ib:Ia is from around the beginning of A.D. to the first half of the second century, and Ib is from mid-second century through the latter half of the second century. As Ia period is identified in only few sites such such Gyoun-ri, Gochang, we do not know that full picture of its cultural composition. However, hither-to unknown sites including Baeksan Fortress, Dongsan-dong, and Jang-dong have been shown to belong to the Ib period. Round settlement and hard plain pottery with stamped design were found in the sites belonging to Ib period. Pottery with stamped design was previously thought to occur later than the third century; however, such pottery was found in the second century in the region of Chonbuk Province. The second period (II) of the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period starts in the third century, and there is an explosive increase in the quantity of the pottery with stamped design. Also, dwelling site (plain structure with columns) and inner facility(stove) show different patterns from the previous period. The culture of the second period plays an important role in connecting Mahan Culture to Baekje Kingdom in Chonbuk Province.
