『범문정충절언행록』의 유모(乳母) ‘열엽’ 연구

A Study on ‘Yeolyeop,’ Nanny in <BeomMoonJeongChoongJeolEonHaengRok>

이 글은 19세기에 창작과 향유가 이루어졌을 것으로 추정되는 국문 장편소설 『범문정충절언행록』의 유모 ‘열엽’의 인물설정과 역할 및 기능을 살피고 그 의미를 알아보고자 한 것이다. 범씨 가문의 시비였던 열엽은 남편과 자식의 죽음에도 불구하고 개가(改嫁)하지 않은 채 범씨 가문에 충성을 다하려고 하는 점이 부각되어 남주인공의 유모로 선발된 인물로, 하층신분에도 불구하고 몰락한 범씨 가문을 일으킨 공로를 인정받아 가문 구성원들로부터 존경을 받으며, 가문의 일원으로 받아들여지는 모습을 보여준다. 이는 유모 열엽이 범씨 가문의 몰락의 순간을 관찰하고 전달하는 역할, 범중엄과 함께 고난을 겪으면서 범씨 가문의 재건을 조력하는 역할, 범씨 가문의 몰락의 계기를 가지고 온 주모(主母)에 대해 비판하는 역할을 자신의 판단 아래 스스로 행한데 기인한 것이라 할 수 있다. 『범문정충절언행록』은 이러한 유모 열엽의 삶의 정황들을 섬세히 그려냄으로써 작가가 하층 신분의 인물을 보조적 역할을 하는 기능적 인물로만 바라보는 것이 아니라, 하층 신분 인물의 삶에 대해 관심을 섬세히 드러낸다는 점에서 인간에 대한 이해가 확대되어 있음을 확인하게 한다. 아울러 유모가 상층 가문의 구성원으로 받아 들여지는 모습은 이작품의 향유가 이루어지던 조선후기 사대부 남성의 유모에 대한인식과도 연관되어 있는 것으로 여겨진다.

The purpose of this research paper is to examine the character, role and function of ‘Yeolyeop,’ nanny appearing in <BeomMoonJeongChoongJeolEonHaengRok> conceived as a classical long novel in Korean of the 19th century and to study the meaning that this novel gives. 'Yeolyeop,' maid of the Beom Family, was highly perceived as a character who did not remarry after her husband and children had died, but tried to remain fully loyal for the sake of the Beom Family, whichmade her selected as the nanny of the male main character. Yeolyeop, despite of her low birth, was admired for having made a contribution to raising the falling Beam Family. Moreover, she was forming close relationships with the Beom family as a member of the family so that her funeral ceremony after her death was being personally held even by the hands of Beom Jung-eom, the family head of the Beom Family. In this narrative, Nanny Yeolyeop is presented as a character who is undertaking as a role of an observer and deliverer of the moment the Beom Family was falling, and an assistant assisting the Beom Family to rise again and sharing emotional empathy with the family while undergoing sufferings with Beom Jung-eom. Also it is shown that she is criticizing for Beom Jung-eom's mother Lady Shims' remarriage after the fall of the Beom Family. <BeomMoonJeongChoongJeolEonHaengRok> not merely describes an assistantcharacter of low birth as a functional one, but emphasizes such a character as a dynamic one by showing the inner life aspect and attention of such a character to people around, which proves the extension of a scope of understanding about humans this novel has. Besides, this novel work describes a nanny as a character forming close relationships with a man of high official family, which is considered to reflect, at some level, the awareness of a nanny by a man of high official family of the late Joseon Age when this work was relished.
