Queering Place by Visibility

본 연구는 ‘게이 남성의 가시성’이라는 게이 커뮤니티의 특징을 확인하고, 이것이 ‘익숙해짐을 통한 물들임’ 이라는 공간적 효과로 나타남을 밝히는 연구이다. 이를 위해 게이 커뮤니티의 형성 배경과 특징에 대해 고찰한 뒤, 서울 낙원동 게이 커뮤니티에서 게이 남성과 이성애자 이웃 사이의 경제적, 사회적 관계를 파악하고, 이성애자 이웃의 게이 남성에 대한 인식과 태도, 그리고 그 변화에 대해 탐구했다. 게이 커뮤니티는 일상공간에서 정체성의 발현을 억압당하는 게이 남성이 자신의 정체성을 드러낸 채 활동할 수 있는 공간이다. 따라서 이곳의 이성애자 이웃은 동성애자로서의 성적 정체성이 드러난 게이 남성과 접촉하게 되지만, 그 경제적, 사회적 관계가 특별하지는 않았다. 그러나 게이 남성의 가시성은 이성애자 이웃이 사회적 통념이 아닌 실제 생활을 통해 게이 남성을 접하는 기회를 제공하며, 이를 통해 이들이 게이 남성에 익숙해지는 계기를 마련했다. 즉 ‘게이 남성의 가시성’이라는 게이 커뮤니티의 특징이 주변을 성적 소수자에 익숙한 환경으로 변화시키는, 즉 퀴어링(queeering)이 라는 공간적 효과로 발현되는 것이다. 이와 같은 퀴어링은 향후 낙원동이 퀴어 정치(queer politics)의 장으로 기능할 수 있음을 시사한다는 점에서 의미가 있다.

This Study checks visibility of gay male as a characteristic of gay community and shows this visibilityhas resulted in queering neighbor places. To achieve the purpose, this study investigates the reasons of formation and the characteristics of gay community, then figures out the economic and social relation between gay people and straight neighbors, after that explores straight neighbors’ perception and attitude of gay people in Nakwon-dong. Gay community is place where gay people gather and do not hide their sexual identity as minority. So straight neighbors near gay community encounter gay people everyday whom people seldom meet in normal places, but relation between them are as normal as relation between straight people. However the visibility of gay people in the gay community makes straight neighbors to accustom themselves to gay people, and it also let them have more positive perception and attitude to gay people. Visibility of gay people, the characteristic of gay community changes surrounding area. This is queering and the spatial effect of gay community. Queering of Nakwon-dong means because Nakwon-dong can be a place of queer politics
