『캔터베리이야기』한국어 번역의 문제점 고찰

영시의 아버지라 불리는 제프리 초서의『캔터베리이야기』는 의미의 다양성과 시인 자신만의 독특한 문학적 표현을 담고 있다. 우리나라를 비롯한 동서양의 많은 현대역자들은 원전이 지닌 의미를 현대어로 옮기기 위해 다양한 시도를 해왔으며 현재에도 이러한 노력은 지속되고 있다. 본 시작품의 번역에서 가장 어려운 부분은 먼저 원작이 중세영어라는 고전어로 작성되었기 때문에 문헌학에 입각한 적확한 의미를 도출하는 작업이 될 것이다. 이와 같은 고증 작업이 선행되어야하기 때문에 초서 번역은 단순한 번역의 차원을 넘어선 지루하고 힘겨운 학술적 여정을 의미한다. 실제로 많은 현대어 번역본들이 중세어 원전에 입각하지 않고 또 다른 현대어 번역을 참조했기 때문에 초서가 원래 의도했던 의미와는 많은 거리가 있는 실정이다. 국내에서 『캔터베리이야기』완역본은 1984년 이후 세 편이 출간되었다. 본 논의에서는 원전에 입각하여 세 편의 번역본에 사용된 의미들을 검증하고 비교하는 작업을 수행한다. 이는 초서 번역의 기본 틀에 해당한다는 점에서 그 의의를 지닌다. 일례로 초서는 옳고 그름의 판단, 도덕적 판단력의 의미로 ‘양심’(conscience)을 사용하고 있지만 여기에 그치지 않고 ny(i)ce conscience(선한 양심)나 spiced conscience(위장된 양심)와 같이 문자적 해석을 넘어선 의역이 요구되는 표현을 구사하고 있다. 이의적확한 번역을 위해 어원에 입각한 의미 추적은 물론 문맥에서 수용되는 의미가 동시에 고찰되어야 할 것이다.

This paper aims to examine the exact meanings of poetic dictions in The Canterbury Tales with references to the modern translations either in Korean or in English. It is a formidable challenge for the translator to translate The Canterbury Tales mainly because its words are archaic to modern readers and its beauty of rhythm can hardly be caught in modern languages. It is quite certain that Chaucer was mindful of words revealing each pilgrim’s inner disposition or morality. He employs, for example, the Middle English “conscience,” “ny(i)ce conscience” and “spiced conscience,” which might be roughly rendered into ‘conscience’, ‘scrupulous conscience’ and ‘seasoned conscience’ respectively. However, such a literal translation will fall short of those various shades of meanings intended by Chaucer. Most critics put more emphasis on the contextual meanings rather than literal senses. Surely their suggestions will help to enhance our understanding of those archaic dictions. Hence a close examination of the given context including Chaucer’s intention will serve as a prerequisite for the most fitting rendering.
