초기현대영어와 현대영어에서 사용된 감탄사와 담화표지로서의 oh에 대한 비교연구

A Comparative Analysis on Interjection oh and Discourse Marker oh in Early Modern English and Modern English

본 논문은 초기현대영어와 현대영어에서 감탄사로 사용된 ‘oh’와 담화표지로 사용된 ‘oh’의 기능을 비교분석하여, 담화표지가 ‘화용화 과정’(Claridge and Arnovick)을 통하여 등장하게 되었음을 주장한다. 본 연구의 비교분석결과, 감탄사 ‘oh’가 감정을 표출하는 본연의 기능은 초기현대영어와 현대영어에서 유사한 빈도로 사용되었는데, 이는 ‘oh’가 화용화 과정의 특징인 어휘 문법적 의미를 고수하고 있음을 의미한다.호격으로 사용된 감탄사 ‘oh’는 현대영어에서 빈도수가 급격히 감소하였는데, 이는 청자에게 호소하기 위하여 사용되던 초기현대영어에서의 기능이 현대영어에서 쇠퇴한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 한편, 현대영어에서 담화표지 ‘oh’의 두 가지 기능(Heritage)은 초기현대영어에서도 발견되었으나, 전반적으로 초기현대영어에서보다는 현대영어에서 더 많이 사용되고 있다. 이는 화용화의 다른 특징인 의미의 확장과 주관화의 증가를 보여주는 것으로 분석할 수 있다.

This study examines the uses of interjection oh and discourse marker oh in early modern English and modern English. Through this comparative analysis, it suggests that the evolution of discourse markers be accounted for in terms of pragmaticalization, which is proposed by Claridge and Arnovick. With respect to oh as interjection, its original function of showing ʻsurpriseʼ was found in both early modern English and modern English with similar frequency. This implies that the interjection oh has maintained the lexico-grammatical meaning, characteristic of one of the pragmaticalization properties. The use of interjection oh in vocatives, however, was much more common in early modern English than in modern English, which means the function of oh as interjection has been weakened in modern English. When oh is employed as a type of discourse marker, the two functions of it, which Heritage identifies in modern English, also appeared in early modern English. In general, oh as discourse marker was more frequently used in modern English than in early modern English. It verifies the other two properties of pragmaticalization, that is, the expansion of meaning by strengthening pragmatic functions and the increase in subjectification.
