Strategies to Promote Free Style Poomsae Competition in Taekwondo

This study aims to provide basic data on ways to promote free style poomsae competition, which was adopted as an official sport in the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. By examining the preceding literatures, the following results are found. First, naming of poomsae should be unified as different names, such as free style poomsae, creative poomsae and applied poomsae, are used by different federations and organizations. Second, subsections in the scoring criteria and rules of competition should be unified because they are also different among federations and organizations. Third, various age groups of Taekwondo players should be encouraged to participate in matches by subdividing players into different groups according to gender, age, and previous award records. Fourth, free style poomsae should be introduced in all the poomsae competitions recognized by the Korea Taekwondo Association and free style poomsae players should be given special admissions opportunities into universities. Fifth, to promote freestyle poomsae competitions, new and various promotion and marketing strategies should be drawn up and used through mass media and online. Sixth, Taekwondo instructors should actively participate in various education sessions and seminars to improve their qualifications and to make continuous efforts to develop and research free style poomsae. Seventh, contests to select the Korean national team of free style poomsae should be held in order to foster talented free style poomsae players who will participate in the World Taekwondo Poomsae Chaimpionships. Thanks to the efforts of the Korea Taekwondo Association, the World Taekwondo Federation, and Kukkiwon, Taekwondo was adopted as an official Olympic sport since the Sydney Olympic in 2000. It is adopted to the next consecutive six Olympics until the Tokyo Olympic in 2020. Taekwondo has grown to be a global martial art sports. To continue the growth and globalization of Taekwondo, various ways to improve free style poomsae competition should be sought.
