Symbol and Knowledge

이 글에서 우리가 다룰 주제는 상징과 지식이다. 인간의 자기이해나 인간의 지식의 성격을 논의할 때, 상징(象徵, symbol)은 대단히 중요한 요소가 된다. 여기에서는 서양 철학에서의 인간의 자기인식의 문제가 어떤 식으로 변화되어 왔으며, 그와 같은 논의들을 통해서 카시러가 무엇을 말하려고 하는지, 왜 카시러는 인간을 ‘이성적 동물’이 아닌, ‘상징적 동물’로 정의하고 있는지, 그리고 상징과 자 기인식, 나아가 지식의 관계를 살펴보고자 한다.

The theme of this article is symbol and knowledge. In the process of self-understanding of Human Being, symbol is very important. In this article, we will deal with the problem of self-knowledge in western philosophy in terms of Cassirer’s view. And we will elucidate Cassirer’s definition about Human Being, that is, from rational animal to animal symbolicum. Finally, we will discuss the concept of symbol, symbolic form and symbolic knowledge.
