Study on Tea Ceremony Education Curriculums and Contents for Youth Humanity Education

With the passage of the Humanity Education Development Act in Korea, there has been growing interest in expanding tea ceremony education as it has long been regarded as effective humanity education for youth. It provides a new opportunity to expand tea ceremony education to all schools in Korea. For this nationwide expansion, a standardized educational curriculum is a pre-requisite to ensure the uniformity of the educational contents. To accomplish this, this study examined the present status of tea ceremony education curriculums and educational contents among kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools and high schools with the objective of determining the differences among them and identifying the common educational contents. This study also found that as the students progress through the school system, there is a deepening in the coverage of the traditional Korean spirit, tea culture and tea ceremony practices. For the expansion of traditional tea ceremony education, this study proposes a national curriculum by combining the 'common' educational contents across the different educational curriculums. This study also proposes a standardization of the 'tea ware' used in classes, from kindergartens to high schools to establish more uniformity across the schools.
