Objective: This study aims to examine the effects of functional electrical stimulation(FES) and task training on hand function using tenodesis grip and muscle activity in patients with spinal cord injury. Method: Twenty four patients with spinal cord injury whose C5-7 had been injured were randomly assigned to a functional electrical stimulation(FES) group and a task training group and then training was performed three times per week, 30 minutes pereach time, for six weeks. Hand function was measured with Jebsen hand function test(JHFT) and activity of the extensor carpi radialis(ECR), flexor digitorum superficialis(FDS) and flexor digitorum profundus(FDP), flexor pollicis longus(FPL) was measured with surface electromyography. In order to compare before and after the intervention within each group, Wilcoxon's signed-ranks test was conducted and in order to compare differences in changes between the groups, Mann-whitney U test was carried out. Statistical significance level of all data was set at p<.05. Results: There was significant difference in hand function test and muscle activity results in both groups after the intervention but there was significant difference in all areas except for muscle activity of the extensor carpi radialis(ECR) in comparison between the groups. Conclusion: Functional electrical stimulation(FES) and task training were effective for improvement in hand functions using tenodesis grip of spinal cord injury patients and in particular task training combined with functional electrical stimulation(FES) was more effective than task training alone.
