When we measure the overcoming process of Netherlands for geographic limitations, We can know that sustainability will be a inherent and social value that Netherlands has sought. In this point, the study on the spatial planning of Netherlands could give a lot of implications to us. The purpose of this study is to grasp the characteristics and the change of the spatial planning in Netherlands, based on the planning doctrine and the planning dimension of sustainability. This study, as the study object, deals with Randstad and Green Heart, and the structure of national space since the 1960s. The significance of this study would be in grasping the change process and characteristics of spatial planning, and having a comprehensive view on spatial planning of Netherlands. The results of study are summarized as the followings. Randstad and Green Heart as the core of the planning doctrine and the spatial planning. The establishment and consistent practices of the planning doctrine that has the growth management of Randstad and preservation of Green Heart as a goal. The application of planning principle as using the strategic planning and sociocratic planning. The solution to social needs through the structural change of national space over following planning doctrine. In current spatial planning, giving priority to economic sustainability over adjusting the planning doctrine for competitiveness improvement among EU cities. Finally, this study suggests the implications for spatial planning and makes the limit and future tasks for this research clear.
