미숙한 필자의 단락 두 번째 문장 양상 연구 - 대학 신입생의 글을 대상으로 -

A Study on Some Aspects of the Second Sentence in Immature Writers' Paragraphs

단락은 여러 개의 문장이 유기적으로 결합되어 구성된다. 단락에서 두 번째 문장의 기능은 두 가지이다. 첫 번째 기능은 첫 번째 문장의 견해를 두 번째 문장의 화제로 삼아 첫 번째 문장을 부연설명하는 것이다. 두 번째 기능은 단락 내용이 발전적으로 전개될 수 있도록 두 번째 문장의 견해를 통해 단락의 전개 방향을 제시하는 것이다. 미숙한 필자는 단락에서 첫 번째 문장의 견해와 두 번째 문장의 화제가 일치하지 않았다. 그 원인은 첫 번째 문장의 견해와 두 번째 문장의 화제 사이의 범위가 다르거나, 이 둘 사이에 의미적 비약 때문이었다. 그리고 두 번째 문장의 견해가 첫 번째 문장의 견해와 유사했다. 이는 단락이 발전적으로 전개되는 것을 방해한다. 대학 신업생 글쓰기 교육에서 단락쓰기를 효과적으로 교육하기 위해서는 단락의 첫 번째 문장과 두 번째 문장의 화제 및 견해 관계에 대한 이해가 필요하다.

A paragraph is a group of sentences which are coherently related to each other. A second sentence in a paragraph has two important functions. Firstly, the comment of the first sentence becomes the topic of the second sentence and thereby the first sentence backs up the first sentence. Secondly, the comment of the second sentence serves to provide the direction of how the paragraph will develop. It is often found, however, that the topic of the second sentence in a paragraph by an immature writer tends not to be related to the comment of the first one. In many cases, the topic of the first sentence and the comment of the second sentence often have different scopes. In others, a logical jump in meaning between the two sentences. It is also found that the comment of the second sentence tends to be similar to that of the first one, obstructing the natural development of the paragraph. Therefore, understanding the relations between the topics and the comments of the first two sentences in a paragraph is crucial to effective paragraph writing for college freshmen.
