This article aims at reporting the practical process of an exploratory case study on teaching modern English and American poetry through the discussion method. The recent studies of the constructivist learning theory that emphasize the student’s critical role in constructing meaning from prior experiences and new information illuminate many reasons and ways to shift the focus of instruction from the teacher to the students. Many scholars, such as Alfred Snider, Maxwell Schnurer, and Austin J. Freeley argue that discussion can be used as a student-centered learning process to put an emphasis on cooperative learning and group-management of tasks to solve problems and improve critical reading, thinking, and writing skills. On the basis of the personal experiences to teach poetry through the discussion method, this paper attempt to show how effective an instructional strategy that engages students in active discussion is, and what potential it has in helping students learn and develop their autonomy and independence.
