This study aims at creating the awareness on critical literacy(CL) and enhancing the reading abilities to appreciate the text through CL. In order to keep up with globalization, in EFL(English as a Foreign Language) situation, we have been forced to read numerous English texts since even preschool period. Nowadays, as the popularity of English education has been increased more than before for the collage entrance exam, lots of books written in English have been published imprudently. As a result, this trend makes us choose English books without deep consideration on the contents in the texts. Furthermore, if the author is a very famous best-selling writer or the English books are very popular such as Cinderella, Snow White and The Princess Diaries, we used to tend to follow and accept not only the intention of the writer but the contents in books thoughtlessly even if the contents can be harmful to intellectual maturity for the young. Therefore we are strongly recommended to recognize the fact that even a masterpiece of literature can obtain the possibilities to contain errors, biases in terms of race, class, gender and power made by the writer. In other words, texts are not ideologically neutral. Plus, they can also represent particular points of view which can influence reader’s ideas as the negative factors. In this situation, CL is definitely required because CL transforms readers into active participants who can equip the independent thoughts and problem-posing questions in reading and simultaneously, invites them to move beyond passively accepting the text’s message to question, examine, or dispute the message. Thus, CL is imperative for readers to enlighten their own ignorance and penetrate both the text and the author’s intentions as not the passive readers but the active readers.
