This study investigated demographic factors’ influence on survey-based measurements of corruption levels. If the factors significantly influence people’s experiences with or perceptions of corruption, demographic variables should be controlled when measuring the extent of public officials’ corruption. The study asked three research questions: 1) Do demographic factors significantly influence the respondents’ experiences with and perceptions of corruption? If so, what demographic factors do so? 2) Does the demographic factors’ significant impact depend on the items mentioned in survey questions concerning levels of corruption? 3) To what degree do demographic factors account for respondents’ experiences with or perceptions of corruption? Based on a review of the literature we generated four hypotheses to explain the relationship between demographic factors and the respondents’ experiences with and perceptions of corruption levels. We tested these hypotheses by using data collected from the Korean Institute of Public Administration on public sector corruption in South Korea. The effects of demographic factors which were found significant were reported and their implications were discussed. This study adds to what is known about the relationships of demographic factors and both experiences and perceptions of corruption by examining demographic variables’ influence in survey-based measurements.
