국가 부패 수준에 대한 특수주의와 투명성의 영향

The Influence of Particularism and Transparency on National Corruption Level: A Cross-Country Analysis

  • 45

While previous studies have largely focused on political and economic factors that affect the level of national corruption, the effects of particularism as a social cultural variable and the transparency of the public sector have yet to be explored. This paper aimed to examine the effects of particularism and transparency on the level of corruption. The hypothetical statements that higher particularism and lower transparency are likely to increase a nation's corruption level were tested statistically using secondary data from 37 countries. The results partially confirmed the hypotheses and revealed that particularism didn't have a significant effect but the effect of transparency level was significant. GDP had the greatest impact on the level of corruption, followed by transparency while the effect of democracy level was not significant. Despite increasing governmental concerns over how to reduce the level of corruption, few systematic studies have been undertaken to provide empirical evidence. The present study treated particularism and transparency as independent factors that influence the level of corruption, whereas previous literature on corruption ignored their effects. In this respect, this study can help to enrich our understanding of the influences of factors such as cultural differences and transparency on the level of corruption.
