Stress and Reactions in Korean Whistleblowers

  • 45

This study attempted to answer several research questions. It asked what types of stress Korean whistleblowers meet with in the course of their actions, what the underlying causes of this stress are, and how they respond to and cope with it. Utilizing Scott & Howard's (1970) stress model and factoring in the four phases of whistleblowing, it created a new model for analyzing the various forms of stress that disclosers suffer after blowing the whistle. The model provides opportunities to examine the types and sources of stress affecting these individuals, as well as their responses to that stress, as experienced during each phase of whistleblowing. Nine typical cases of whistleblowering, well known in South Korea, were selected for analysis, and data were collected through in-depth interviews. The results of this study are expected to help the government improve protection policies for whistleblowers, help whistleblowers alleviate their stress, and prevent un-just retaliation.
