A Cultural-Economic Study on the Perception of Corruption Level in the Construction Industry

International interest on fair competition has been encouraged in the Global market economy. As economic approach on fair competition has focused on market structure and industrial organization, it has passed over behavior analysis of corruption activities. Fostering economic circumstances to scrap out corruption, for example international agreement on anti-corruption, survey on perception level of corruption, and strengthening of regulation, is very important. However, it is more significant establishing the culture of anti-corrupt economic activities in order to intensify actual competition power in industry. The perception of corruption level in the construction industry is more serious than any other industry in Korea. Internal corruption structure and social perception of the construction industry have made a vicious cycle. Negative image on the construction industry has been formed by the recognition of lackness in credibility, transparency, and fairness of the construction industry. Failure of systematic improvement and construction firm's innovation is caused mainly by over-emphasizing normative and macro approaches on negative image, unfairness, and corruption. Therefore, culturenomic analysis is strongly recommended. The internal innovation and the reform of social perception can be realized based on culturenomic approach.
