<황현전>의 서사적 특징과 그 의미

A Study on Narrative Features of Hwanghyeon-jeon

본고는 <황현전>의 이본을 소개하고 작품의 서사적 특징을 알아보았다. <황현전>은 아직까지 학계에서 본격적인 연구가 진행된 바 없는 작품으로, 죽은 남편의 복수를 위하여 남장을 하고 전장에 출전하는 여성의 이야기를 다루고 있다. 이 작품은 아단문고 소장본(1권 1책)이 유일본으로 알려져 있었으나 최근에 선문대학교 중한번역문헌연구소 소장본(1권 1책)이 발굴되었다. 두 이본은 거의 동일한 내용을 담고 있지만 선문대본은 국문체로, 아단문고본은 국한문체로 필사되어 있어 선문대본이 보다 전대의 표기방식을 반영하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 이 작품의 전반부에는 황현의 탄생에서부터 죽음에 이르기까지의 일대기가 서술되어 있으며, 후반부는 소군이 전장에 나가 죽은 남편의 복수를 하는 내용을 담고 있다. 이 작품은 전대 소설에서 거의 나타나지 않는 설화와 무가의 화소를 수용하여 다른 소설과의 차별화를 꾀하고 있다. 또한 이 작품은 여성영웅이 등장하고 있으나, 열녀(烈女)로 표상됨으로써 여성영웅소설이 지니는 문제의식이 희석되고 있다.

This paper is the first study about the Korean classical fiction, Hwanghyeon-jeon. The new version of Hwanghyeon-jeon was recently discovered from the collection of Sunmoon University. Although there is no substantial difference in the narrative between the new version and the previous version possessed in Adanmoongo, Hwanghyeo-jeon in Sunmoon university was written in more previous writing system than that in Adanmoongo. The first half of the novel shows Hwanghyeon's life from his birth to his death in the war and the other contains Sogoon's revenge for her husband's murder. The narrative structure of the fiction is simillar to that of the conventional heroic fiction and female heroic fiction. However, it gives variation in the details adopting motives from various folk tales and Seosamuga and showing features of stories of a virtuous woman.
