고졸취업자들의 평생학습 동기에 대한 탐색 : 상고 출신 대학진학 여성들을 중심으로

A Qualitative Research on Life-long learning Motivations of High-school graduate Women-workers

이 연구는 질적접근에 기초하여 상업계 고교 출신 여성 고졸취업자의 평생학습 동기에 대해 살펴보았다. 이들의 평생학습 동기는 크게 네 가지, 현실적, 자기실현적, 업무적, 학습적 동기로 나타났는데, 현실적 동기의 경우, 여성 고졸취업자들은 승진이나 임금, 업무 분담, 연령 성별 등 직장내 차별을 겪고 있었으며 그로 인한 불만에서 새로운 학습이나 진로를 모색하고 있었다. 자기실현적 동기의 경우, 이들은 경력이 쌓이면서 발생하는 업무숙달과 매너리즘으로 인해 직장생활에서 즐거움과 보람을 찾지 못 하고 있었으며, 이 때문에 장기적인 진로 고민과 자기계발, 자기실현적 차원에서 대학 진학이나 자격증 취득, 어학이나 해외 연수, 전직이나 이직 등을 모색하고 있었다. 업무적 동기의 경우, 고졸취업자들은 직장내 요청과 업무상 필요에서 평생학습을 계속해 가고 있었다. 즉 회사내 각종 연수나 동아리 활동 등에 참여하면서 자신의 역량과 능력을 계발하고 있었으며, 아울러 업계 내 사회적 관계 확대와 직업적 평판의 향상을 위해 대학원 등에 진학하고 있었다. 이 외에도 이들은 학습적 동기 또한 매우 높았다. 배움에 대한 항상적 열망으로 충만한 가운데, 인문교양, 문화예술, 육아와 교육 등 다양한 관심사를 배경으로 지속적으로 평생학습을 이어가고 있었다. 이상의 결과를 기초로 여성 고졸취업자의 평생학습 동기의 특성에 대해 논의하였으며, 고졸취업자 평생학습 진작을 위한 시사점을 도출하였다.

This study examines why women who graduated from commercial high school and entered college participated in life-long education using the qualitative approach. I find the following patterns. First, workplace discrimination in terms of promotion, earning and job assignment, due to age and gender, motivated them to continuing education or searching for a new career. Second, they participated in life-long education for the purpose of self-fulfilling. As the job tenure increased, they got accustomed to their jobs and fell into mannerism. In the effort of searching for a more meaningful life, they attempted various things such as finding a new career, pursuing self-development, going to college, acquiring certification, and attending language school. Third, there was also work-related motivation. Life-long education for the high school graduates was required in workplace. They participated in various training program and small group activities to improve their job skills. In addition, life-long education was also helpful to expand social network and improve reputation. Personal motivation was also important; learning humanities, art, culture, and childrearing. Base on the observation, I draw the policy implications to enhance life-long education for the female workers with commercial high school diploma.
