The Case Analysis and Its Implications of Career Education in American University

본 연구의 목적은 미국 대학에서 진로교육의 사례들을 분석하고, 한국 대학에서의 진로교육을 위한 시사점을 도출하는 것이다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위해 본 연구는 미국 플로리다주립대학교(Florida State University), 콜로라도주립대학교(Colorado State University), 펜실베이니아주립대학교(Pennsylvania State University)를 선택하였고, 이들 3개 대학교에서 진로교육과 관련된 정보를 수집하였다. 그리고 진로교육 시스템, 코스들, 상담시스템 등을 분석하였다. 주요 연구결과를 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 미국 3개 대학들에는 ‘진로센터’ 또는 ‘진로서비스’라는 공식적인 조직이 있다. 둘째, 진로교육 내용으로서 학생이해에 의한 진로상담이 매우 강조된다. 3개 대학들은 전공 선택이나 진로 선택 문제를 가진 학생들을 위해 심층 면담과 같은 다양한 진로상담 방법들을 사용하면서 진로 또는 전공 선택과 같은 문제를 해결하려고 노력한다. 셋째, 3개 대학들은 진로교육을 위한 다양한 프로그램과 행사들을 운영한다. 특히. 네트워킹의 강화는 중요한 목표이다. 마지막으로, 3개 대학들은 진로교육과 관련된 다양한 과목들을 운영하며, 다양한 자료들을 개발한다. 진로교육과 관련된 다양한 과목들은 크게 진로 계획 과목들과 직업 찾기 과목들로 나누어진다. 이러한 주요 결과들에 기초하여 한국 대학의 진로교육을 위한 시사점들이 논의되었다.

The purpose of the study is to analyze the cases of career education in American university and draw some implications for career education in Korean university. For achieving this purpose, the study chose Florida State University(FSU), Colorado State University(CSU), and Pennsylvania State University(PSU), collected the information related to career education in above three universities, and analyzed career education system, courses, counseling system, and so on. Main results of the study were as the followings. Firstly, there is official organization in universities. Secondly, career counseling by student’s understanding as career education content is very emphasized. The universities tries to solve the problem such as career or major choice using various career counseling methods including intensive interview for students who have major choice or career choice problem. Thirdly, the universities operate a number of programs and events for career education. In particular, the reinforcement of networking is an important objective. Finally, the universities operate various courses related to career education and develop numerous materials. The various courses related to career education divide into career planning courses and job search courses. Based on the results, some implications for career education in Korean university were discussed.
