A Study on the Dictionaries for Elementary School Students in Korea and Japan

This paper presents a comparative study focusing on loanwords registered as headwords in dictionaries for elementary school students of the two countries, nKorea and Japan from a lexicographical perspective. Based on the results of comparative considerations, essential points to be brought to mind in publishing dictionaries for elementary school students are as follows: 1) It is necessary to consider the criteria and the method to select loanwords as headwords from various angles. 2) For some loanwords related to science, it is necessary to provide supplementary information reflecting the connection with the curriculum of elementary school. 3) The accurate understanding about the origins of loanwords and informationoffering are needed. 4) Taking into account the characteristics of Korean dictionaries, consistency is required in the provision of appropriate information of part-of-speech as well as in setting out the criteria for selecting headwords in accordance with part-of-speech.
