Les Miserables by Victor Marie Hugo has fascinated many readers of the world since it was published in 1862, and this literary work was introduced at an early stage in Japan and Korea. The first motion picture screening in Korea was held in May 1920, a fact that is first uncovered in the present article. So far, previous studies on the acceptance of Les Miserables have exclusively concentrated on the text, due to which no attention has been paid to non-text aspects of the work such as motion pictures. In analyzing the first screening of “Les Miserables” in Korea, this article sheds light on the group of the Implantation Farm of Chosun in Daegu. Further, in the process of confirming the background in this screening and its effect, it is revealed that the screening is correlated with important shifts concerning the political, historical, and economical situations of the colonized era of Korea in around 1920.
