文学作品創作の原動力としての歴史的準拠考察

A History-based Analysis as a Driving Force of the Creation of Literary Works -Focusing on “Sumai-no-sechie(Seasonal Court Banquets for Sumo)” -

相撲の節会とは、相撲競技を天皇が観覧し、その後、臣下とともに宮 中で宴会を開く、いわゆる宮中儀式、年中行事の一種である。平安時代の 作品のなかでみられる相撲の用例は、とくにうつほ物語に多く現れて いる。そのなかでも内侍のかみ巻は、一巻を通して相撲の節会の準備過 程や当日の儀式の様子を詳細に描いている。しかしながら、相撲の取り組 み自体はあまり描写されておらず、節会の日に天皇や貴族たちがいかにそ の行事を楽しんでいるか、そこに重点が置かれている。相撲の取り組み場 面を中心に、前半は女御たちによる賄ひの場面が、後半では天皇を中心 とした宴の場面が詳しく描かれているが、これこそが内侍のかみ巻におい て相撲の節会が緻密に記された主な理由である。相撲の節会の場面で は女御の賄ひという虚構の設定がなされているが、これによってうつ ほ物語を貫く男女の精神的な恋という主題も描くことができた。さらに、相撲の節会の夜の饗宴の際、仲忠の母の弾琴の話に戻ることもでき、うつほ物語の転換点としても機能している。こうした点から、相撲の節会は作品をより豊かに描くための原動力としての役割を果たして いるといえる。そのうえ、相撲の節会の描写のあり方からは、源氏物語への影響関係もうかがうこともできると思われる。

“Sumai-no-sechie(seasonal court banquets for sumo)” refers to a kind of imperial ceremonies, where the Emperor of Japan, who has watched sumo games, holds a banquet with his vassals. Among various literary works written during the Heian period, “Utsuho Monogatari” displays a number of occurrences of the word “sumo.” In particular, the volume of “Naishi-no Kami,” throughout the story, describes in detail the process of preparing for a “seasonal court banquet for sumo” as well as the ceremony itself. Sumo games themselves, however, are not depicted much; a main focus of the volume is put on the scenes where the Emperor and nobles enjoy the ceremony. The first half of the volume mainly describes the scenes of “tamai” by court ladies, whilst the latter half of the volume describes the banquet itself. It is these scenes that the volume of “Naishi-no Kami” is mainly concerned with. As for the fictitious scenes of “tamai,” they enable the author to depict the main theme of “Utsuho Monogatari,” namely platonic relationships between men and women. Furthermore, during the “seasonal court banquet for sumo,” Nakatada-no Haha plays the koto, which causes a shift in perspective from the story of “Atemiya Kyuukon Tan” back to the story of “Toshikage Ichizoku-no Kin.” In these respects, “seasonal court banquets for sumo” serve as a driving force of enriching the story. Moreover, the way in which “seasonal court banquets for sumo” are described seems to be the key to speculating the effect of “Utsuho Monogatari” on the “Tale of Genji.”
