Japanese V-te V Compounds as Post-Syntactic Compounds

This article argues against string-vacuous syntactic verb raising in V-te V complex predicates in Japanese, contra Hayashi and Fujii (2015) (H & F). The evidence presented in H & F leads us to conclude that V-te V predicates like tukut-te moraw ‘have someone cook’ forms a single morphological unit. I show, however, that their discussions on the V-te V compounds are not compelling enough to conclude that they are formed via syntactic verb raising. Instead, I show that they are formed post-syntactically with no recourse to verb raising in Narrow Syntax.
