The King’s Speech를 통해 살펴본 버림(unlearning)을 위한 교육적 배려

Contemplating Educational Care for Unlearning through an Analysis of The King’s Speech

본 연구는 지식 주입 중심의 교육과 억압적인 양육방식이 낳은 주체성의 침식과 강화된 순응성을 버리는 작업에 대해 숙고하는 것이다. 이를 위해 필자는 도구적 합리주의와 과학주의로 무장된 지식중심 교육으로 타자화된 주관성 혹은 주체의 목소리 회복을 위한 타인의 배려는 어떠해야하는가? 라는 물음을 상정하였다. 이 물음에 대한 논의를 위해 필자는 The King’s Speech에 나타난 환자(Bertie)와 언어치료사(Lionel) 사이의 관계를 융의 이론을 중심으로 분석하였다. 이어서 교육에서 일어나는 비주체화를 거부, 사랑, 이상아의 개념으로 논의함으로써 ‘버림’의 필요성을 주장한다. 나아가 Bertie의 ‘버림’을 도우는 언어치료사의 치료가 교육에 주는 의미에 대해서 논의한다. 이를 통해 필자는 버림을 위한 배려를 위해서 배려의 결과보다 주체에 대한 이해의 우선, 고도로 개별화된 접근, 타자의 자기개방의 가능성, 배려적 관계 형성, 그리고 버림의 작업은 주체만이 할 수 있다는 이해가 필요하다고 주장한다. 이러한 접근에 기초한 배려 관계를 통해 주체는 보다 실제적인 자기-자기 관계를 발전시킬 수 있는 기회를 얻게 됨을 제안한다.

This study stems from a question about how to recover the subjectivity or “voice” of a subject who is objectified by an intellect-oriented education strengthened and exacerbated by scientific rationality. The focus of this study is on caring approaches for unlearning for of those whose subjectivities and voices have been suffocated by oppressive child-raising and educational practices. The recovery of the voice requires such people to unlearn their strong conformity to outer forces and restrictions, especially such forces from significant others. For this purpose, I analyze the relationship between Bertie (the patient) and Lionel (the therapist) in The King’s Speech using the concepts of Carl Jung. Then, I discuss the concepts of disconfirmation, love, and anomaly in order to argue for the necessary process of unlearning for recovering the voices of individuals in their education. Furthermore, I contemplate the educational implications of Lionel’s approach to curing Bertie’s stammering. The implications include the priority of understanding individuals over the consequence of the act of caring; a highly individualized approach; the possibilities of the disclosure of the other; developing and sustaining caring relationship; and the primacy of the role of the subject in the journey of unlearning, a journey which can lead to developing an authentic self-self relationship.
