Bribery by Public Officials

This article identifies the major features of bribery by public officials, and assesses the effectiveness of the Prevention of Corruption Act in curbing it. As public officials violate the public trust when they accept bribes in performing their duties, bribery must be eliminated to ensure efficient public administration and the recovery of public trust. It is difficult to gather evidence in bribery cases when government agencies cover up cases to prevent the exposure of both the bribers and victims. Moreover, those who accept bribes do not feel guilty about their actions. The article also examines the use of legislation to curb bribery in the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany. The author concludes that bribery can be eliminated by enforcing the law, nurturing the legal spirit of public officials, and introducing a Prevention of Corruption Act.
