Toward the Others, with the Others:

“복음의 기쁨은 예수님과 만나는 모든 사람들의 마음과 생활을 가득 채웁니다.” 이렇게 시작되는 교황 권고 ?복음의 기쁨?(Evangelii Gaudium)에서, 프란치스코 교황은 오늘날 세상에서 복음을 선포한다는 것이 무엇인지에 대해 묻는다. 교황은 “복음 본연의 참신함을 되찾는 것”이 중요하다고 강조하면서, 복음 안에서 “새로운 길”과 “창조적인 방법”을 찾으려면, 예수를 우리의 “진부한 도식” 안에 가두어 두지 말아야 한다고 역설한다. 교황의 강론을 한마디로 요약하자면, ‘타자에 대한 개방’이라 할 수 있다. 타자성에 대한 논의는 현대 사상과 신학, 그리고 윤리학 분야에 있어서 가장 중요한 이슈 중 하나이다. 타자성의 부각은 경제적, 정치적, 문화적 지구화로 비롯된 다인종, 다문화, 다종교 사회라는 현실 인식에서 비롯되었다고 볼 수 있고, 교황의 권고 ?복음의 기쁨?은 이러한 시대적 분위기 속에서 작성되었다. 본 논문은 로마 가톨릭과 WCC 간의 대화를 통해 21세기 시대적 요청이라 할 수 있는 ‘타자에 대한 환대와 배려’의 문제를 다각적으로 모색하는 데 목표가 있다. 세계화와 자본에 의한 전 지구적 재편이 완료된 현 시점에서, 우리는 자본의 흐름을 따라 표류하는 다양한 타자들을 어떻게 만나야 하는가? 본 논문이 최종적으로 의도하는 바는 에큐메니칼 사회윤리의 새로운 방향을 제안하는 것이다. 그것은 억압당하고 고난당하는 타자에 대한 책임을 회복하는 것이고, 세계화로 인해 야기되는 새로운 악의 구조를 극복하는 것이다.

“The joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus”; thus begins the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, by which Pope Francis develops the theme of the proclamation of the Gospel in the contemporary world. The Pope invites the reader to “recover the original freshness of the Gospel”, finding “new avenues” and “new paths of creativity”, without enclosing Jesus in our “dull categories”. If one word sums up the theme of Pope’s sermon, it is “openness toward the Other”. Otherness has become one of the most important issues in most areas of contemporary theology, philosophy, and ethics. Otherness comes to the fore within the context of a multicultural and poly-ethnic world, which is a result of economic, politic and cultural globalization. This article attempts to expand my understanding of otherness by examining its present and future in dialogue with Roman Catholic and WCC. Namely, my purpose for providing an ecumenical conversation between the two sides is to ask a question of “how we should encounter the other who is different from us in the contemporary globalizing world?” This article concludes by proposing a new orientation of an ecumenical social ethics, which restores the fullness of meaning and responsibility in a world plagued with suffering and overcomes the problems of evil in the newly emerging context of globalization, not through a simple verbal and theological solution, but through the very compassion and presence of God with us.
