What does a defeated candidate leave when he loses in an election? In the American presidential election of 1992, the vice presidential candidate of the Republican party, Dan Quayle, raised a controversial campaign issue, 'family values' by accident when he happened to criticize a fictional character in a TV drama, Murphy Brown. During the Republican National Convention held in Houston, Texas, in the summer of 1992, 'family values' became the focal point of the Republican campaign strategy. But the campaign phrase, family values, was forgotten immediately after the Republican candidates, lost the 1992 presidential election. However, family values modified by the Clinton administration into family welfare issues continued to remain in American politics. In addition, family welfare issues became contending political issues for the Republican Party and the Democratic Party in the late 1990s. Taking these things into consideration, the defeated Republican candidates, in particular Dan Quayle, should be credited with their contribution to American family welfare system even though they were defeated candidates and their issues were seemingly forgotten.
