The effects of computer games for young children

Little research has been carried out into non-arcade electronic game playing as this was originally perceived as a harmless and enjoyable pastime. However, with the ever-increasing interest and participation of young children in this activity, much concern has been expressed about the effects of these games on children. At the centre of the debate is the question of whether they are detrimental to a young person's healthy development. There are specific concerns about the implications for aggression, addiction, criminal activity and reduced academic achievement. This review examines the research on the effects of computer games on young children. The available studies into the effects of computer games on children's behaviour are limited to measuring possible short-term aggressive consequences. Therefore, the strongest conclusion emerging from the present review is the need for more research into the long-term effects of computer games on children. This points to the requirement for longitudinal studies (rather than cross-sectional and retrospective studies) which could record developmental features of computer game players and establish the long-term effects on young children of playing computer games. Until this is done, claims as to the effects on behaviour will be weak and directions for prevention, intervention and treatment will remain limited in scope.
