The advance technique for computer game rendering is not only focused on the photorealistic appearance. Rule-based painting is a type of art that follows a series of pre-defined steps in the production process and has been commonly utilized to produce artwork throughout history. The methodology is similar to procedure or generation art in contemporary computer art. The procedure or generation art is usually paired with the development of a computational device, but, as forefathers, rule-based painting certainly influenced the field long before the computer era. In this paper, I suggest principles to reproduce rule-based painting using a computational algorithm and present various examples that highlight the conceptual origin of procedurally-generated art, thereby exposing its potential and defining its boundary within the current technology.
