휴대용 영어단어 학습기의 효과성 검증

The effectiveness of mobile English vocabulary learning device

본 연구는 최근 많이 사용하는 휴대용 영어단어 학습기에서 실제로 학습효과가 발생하는지 아닌지를 실험연구를 통해 검증하였다. 실험 조건들은 1초에 한 단어씩 컴퓨터 모니터를 통해 제시하는 조건(광고의 주장)과 영어단어 카드에 단어와 뜻을 제시한 조건 그리고 컴퓨터 모니터로 단어와 뜻을 제시하되 그 학습 시간을 조절할 수 있는 조건이었다. 각 조건의 효과성을 증대시키기 위해 비슷한 영어 능력 수준의 실험참가자를 무선적으로 할당하고 철저히 통제한 극저빈도 영어단어를 학습시켰다. 학습 후 학습한 영어단어에 대해 회상률, 재인율, 재인속도를 측정하여 조건별로 비교하였다. 그 결과 학습기 광고의 주장과는 다르게 초당 1회씩 단어와 뜻을 제시하는 경우의 학습이 가장 저조했다. 이에 본 논문은 왜 그 학습이 저조한지 그 이유를 인지심리학적으로 설명하였고 어떻게 하면 휴대용 영어단어 학습기의 학습효과를 증가시킬 수 있는지를 제안하였다.

The present study investigated whether the argument of advertisements, "You don't need a lot of effort to memorize English words, just look this device. if so you can memorize 100 words in half hour", that several companies have producted mobile English vocabulary learning devices is reliable or not. In order to uncovering the question, word cards condition, self-pace condition, and forced-display condition were compared. Word card and self-pace condition led participants consume cognitive efforts to learn new words. On the contrary, forced-display condition was not to provide sufficient time with participants for consuming cognitive efforts to learn new words. The results showed that participants' performances in forced-display condition was worst than those in word cards and self-pace condition. The present study explained the reason and suggested the way to improve the effectiveness of mobile English vocabulary learning devices.
