This thesis is to research how Donghak had developed Korean modern education spirit and activities in an area of enlightenment. Also, in this study, education is described in the wide sense containing the reformation and its subconscious influence, not in the narrow sense of its institutional aspects. It is believed that Donghak reflected on the underdeveloped culture and the conflicting social customs and was in line with the spirit of the modern enlightenment education which intended to advance toward the new civilization and new cultural society. Therefore, Donghak and its modern enlightenment education is the creative spirit which appeared, reflecting on Chosun society. The key of Donghak spirit, Innaecheon, which means man is a god, is the humanistic and democratic ideas, its reforming spirit is the modern innovative idea of the society, and the spirit of its patriotism and loving people is the spontaneous self-reliance thought. The evidence has been investigated in the main body of this thesis that Donghak strongly started the creative enlightenment campaign and the practice of education based on these essential ideas mentioned above from the late Chosun through Japanese colonial ruling periods. Considering all of these things, Donghak is thought to have greatly contributed to our ethenic culture and the reform of our awareness, which was very low in the late Chosun, by education and enlightenment.
