Are Adaptable Appraisal, Social Support, & Compensating Experiences Family Protective Factors?: Focusing on the The Effects of Financial Difficulties, and a Family Member’s Medical Problems and Related Caregiving Burden on Family Adaptation

본 연구는 가족이 경제적 어려움이 가족적응에 미치는 영향, 그리고 가족원의 의료 및 돌봄문제가 가족적응에 미치는 영향 관계에서 가족의 적응적 평가, 사회적지지 및 보상적 경험이 보호요인으로서 기능하는지를 검증하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이와 같은 연구목적을 위해 구조화된 설문지를 활용하여 서울시 S구의 474가족으로부터 수집된 자료에 대해 위계적 회귀분석을 실행하였다. 이론적으로 가정된 바와 같이, 두 개의 독립 변수들은 가족적응과 부적(-) 관련성을 갖는 것으로 밝혀졌는데, 이는 ‘가족의 경제적 어려움’과 ‘가족원의 의료 및 돌봄 문제’가 가족적응의 위험 요인이라는 것을 의미한다. 또한 적응적 평가, 사회적 지지, 그리고 보상적 경험은 가족 적응과 정적(+) 관련성을 가지고 있음이 확인되었다. 그러나, 경제적 어려움과 가족적응 간 관계에 있어서 세 변수들의 조절적 보호요인효과는 관찰되지 않았다. ‘의료 및 돌봄 문제’와 ‘가족적응’ 간 관계에서, 사회적 지지와 보상적 경험은 조절 효과를 갖는 것으로 밝혀졌지만, 예상과는 달리 이 상호작용항들의 회귀계수가 음수(-)인 것으로 나타났다. 이는 가족 내 의료 및 돌봄문제가 심각한 가족의 경우 사회적 지지와 보상적 경험이 가족적응에 미치는 긍정적 영향력은 가족 내 의료 및 돌봄 문제가 심각하지 않은 가족에 비해 더 약함을 의미한다. 논의에서는 가족정책 및 서비스와 관련한 본 연구의 함의와 연구결과로부터 도출된 실천적 제언이 제시되었다.

This study was designed to answer the following four research questions: (1) Are financial difficulties of families negatively associated with family adaptation?: (2) Do adaptive appraisal, social support, and compensatory experience function as family protective factors in the association between financial difficulties and family adaptation?: (3) Are family members’ medical problems and its related caregiving burden negatively related to family adaptation?: and (4) Do adaptive appraisal, social support, and compensatory experience function as family protective factors in the association between medical problemㆍcaregiving burden and family adaptation? The data for this study were collected from 474 families living in S-Gu, Seoul, Korea utilizing structured survey questionnaires. A series of hierarchical multiple regressions, and descriptive statistics were performed. As expected, the two independent variables were found to be negatively associated with family adaptation, indicating that ‘financial difficulties of families’ and ‘family members’ medical problems and related caregiving burden’ are risk factors for family adaptation. Adaptive appraisal, social support, and compensatory experience were also linked positively to family adaptation. However, no moderating protective effects were observed. It implies that adaptive appraisal, social support, and compensatory experience have only compensatory protective effects(main effects) in the relationships. In the association between family association and family members’ medical problem and related caregiving burden,’ social support and compensatory experience were found to have moderating effects but in the opposite direction to those expected. Implications for family services and policies are discussed.
