National Image and Human Exchange: A Pilot Study for Evaluating the Degree of Satisfaction of Foreign Students Who Study in Korea

유학은 유학생으로 하여금 유학한 나라에 대하여 강력한 호감을 갖게 하고 장기적으로는 유학생이 귀국 후에도 유학한 나라에 우호적인 세력으로 남게 하는 경향을 갖는다는 점에서 가장 효과적인 국가이미지 제고방안이라고 할 수 있다. 현 재 한국에는 10만여 명의 외국인 유학생이 공부하고 있다. 그러나 이들의 유학생활 만족도에 관한 신뢰할 만한 연구가 부족한 형편이다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식에 근거하여 한국외국어대학교에 재학중인 외국인 유학생들을 대상으로 그들의 한국생활에 대한 만족도를 조사·분석하고 있다. 분석결과 절대다수의 학생들이 한국생활에 대하여 만족을 표명하고 있으나, [언어/물가/인간관계] 등에서 어려움을 느끼고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 예비 연구는 연구의 확장 및 발전을 위한 하나의 기초자료로서 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

Having foreign students who take higher education courses in Korea is one of the effective ways of improving Korea's national image in the global society, as those students can get affirmative feelings and sentiments toward Korea and Korean society and stay as pro-Korean group after they go back to their home countries. Currently, there exist almost 100,000 foreign students who study in Korea. But it is not easy to find out concrete data regarding the degree of satisfaction of those students. Against this backdrop, this study aims to analyze the degree of satisfaction of students who study in Hankuk University of Foreign Studies as a sample case for expanding the study nationwide. The results show that the majority of the students are satisfied with their stay in Korea, but at the same time a lot of students expressed difficulties in Korean language, prices and human relations. This pilot study can be used as a basic material for expanding and developing the research for evaluating the degree of satisfaction of foreign students who study in Korea.
