Effects of Education on Nurses' Awareness and Performance of Evidenced-Based Guidelines for Undernutrition Management

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of education on nurses’ awareness and performance of evidence-based guidelines (EBGs) for management of undernutrition to elderly people in geriatric hospitals. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-and post-test design was used. A total of 48 nurses were recruited from two geriatric hospitals in South Korea assigned to experimental group (n=21) and control group (n=27). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, χ2-test, t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test with SPSS Window 19.0 program. Results: After completion of the 4-week EBGs education program, the findings showed that experimental group had significantly higher level of nurses’ awareness (Z=-2.00, p=.046) and performance (Z=-1.99, p=.047) of undernutrition management than control group. Conclusion: These findings suggest that EBGs education program could be effective in promoting nurses’s awareness of EBGs for undernutrition management and improving the quality of nutritional care for the institutionalized elderly people with undernutrition.
