『太平御覽』의 편찬에 대하여

『太平御覽』은 宋代에 국가에서 편찬한 최대 규모의 類書로 그 규모는 약 1천 권에 달한다. 국가에서 이러한 도서를 편찬한 이유는 당시의 문화적 사정과 관련이 있다. 당시 중국을 통일한 宋朝가 소장하고 있는 도서는 상당히 영세했다. 영세한 규모의 도서는 송조의 통치자에게 문화적으로 심각한 위기였다. 그리하여 송 초기에 국가에서는 도서의 수집에 열중했고, 그 결 과 일정 규모의 도서가 확충됨에 따라 이러한 문헌들을 체계적으로 정리, 종합할 필요가 있었다. 더욱이 隋唐이래 수많은 학문적 성취가 이루어졌음에도 불구하고 이를 집대성하여 하나의 학술 체계로 편성하는 작업은 唐中期이래로 정체되어 있었다. 기존의 유서는 이러한 당 중기 이후 학문의 사정을 제대로 반영하지 못했던 것이다. 그리하여 분산된 천하의 도서를 한 곳에 모아 그 차이와 중복, 탈루를 비교하여 최상의 善本을 작성하고 이를 토대로 하나의 학술 체계를 마련할 필요가 있었는데 이러한 작업은 국가만이 가능한 것이었다. 그리고 이 과정에서 견지된 원칙은 전통 중국문화 즉 유교의 우위를 확고히 하는 것이었다. 이는 곧 국가가 유교의 원칙과 관점에 입각하여 천하의 모든 학문을 아우르는 학술 체계를 정비하고자 했음을 의미한다. 이런 점에서 『태평어람』의 편찬은 통일왕조에 의한 문화의 집대성이라는 차원에서 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
