김수자 작품에 나타난 여성성에 관한 연구

A Study on the Femininity in Kim Sooja Work

본 연구는 국제무대에서 힘차게 활약하고 있는 한국출신의 여성작가 김수자(金守子)의 작품에서 중심이 되는 주제인 여성성에 관하여 다룬 연구이다. 특별히 주목되는 것은 세계의 여성작가들이 삶을 다른 영역의 예술로 되살리는 다양한 활동배경의 양상 속에서, 여성성을 강조하여 작품들을 독자적으로 표현해 내었기 때문이다. 세부적 연구로는 먼저 김수자 작품의 표현적 변화가 여성성으로 연결되는 작업의 특색에 대하여 해석을 하고, 개인적인 독자적 경험을 함유한 작품들이 여성성과 어떻게 접목되어 표현 되는지를 파악 할 것이다. 특히 김수자의 ‘바느질’이라는 행위를 통해서 여성성이라는 담론으로 연결된 초기 꿰매기 작업들(1983-1988)과 연역적 오브제(1989-1994), 그리고 1995년 광주비엔날레에서 중외공원 소나무 숲속에 광주 민주항쟁의 희생자들에게 헌정하는 헌옷 보따리를 늘어놓는 작업, 2002년 브룩클린의 묘지에서,<묘비명>등, 퍼포먼스와 장소 특정적 설치 작품들의 특징들을 정리하고, 작품 속에 내재된 여성성의 맥락에서 깊이 고찰하여 연구하고자 한다. 이러한 연구들을 함으로써 김수자 작품 속에 내재된 여성성의 위치를 확인함과 동시에 국제 전시들의 현상과 한국 미술계의 진행까지 관계되는 중요한 연계적 가치에 대한 해석을 돕고자 한다.

This study explores the subject of femininity, a central motif in the works of Kim Sooja - a Korean female artist with an international reputation. What is particularly noteworthy is how her works, amidst the global trend of female artists finding manifestation of their lives in various art forms, emphasize femininity in an independent fashion. The study first begins with an analysis of how the expressive changes in Kim’s work connect to femininity, followed by a detailed study of how her works, bearing individual and autonomous experiences, find expression of connection to femininity. In particular, early sewing works (1983-1988), which related to the discourse of femininity through needlework, will be examined along with a range of other works such as: her 1995 Gwangju Biennale work which installed bags of old clothes in a pine grove at Jungoe Park in memory of the victims of Gwangju Democratic Uprising: <Epitaph> (2002) which took place in a Brooklyn cemetery: and others. The idea is to summarize the characteristic context of Kim’s works and to conduct an in-depth study into the context of femininity. Such explorative study aims to reaffirm the place of femininity in Kim’s works, while proffering an interpretation of their relative value in the context of the Korean art community as well as international exhibitions.
