Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera (1986), an adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s French novel Le Fantome de l’Opera, is one of the most successful musical adaptations ever produced. This paper discusses the 2011 film adaptation of Webber’s musical, The Phantom of the Opera, with an emphasis on psychological perspectives and the representation of characters. Specifically, I argue from the psychological perspective that Christine vacillates between Raul, who represents everyday life reflected in conscious wishes and the Phantom, who represents fantasy and art reflected in unconscious desires. Hence, Christine’s vacillation and conflict between Raul and the Phantom is discussed from this psychological perspective centrally.
